Brasilia's 60th anniversary

Apr 22, 2020, 02:36 PM

Brasilia, Brazil lockdown sound recorded by Thiago S. Brandao.

"This recording was made at 8:49 PM in front of the Metropolitan Cathedral Nossa Senhora Aparecida, in Brasilia, on April 21, 2020, a Tuesday.

"On that date Brasília reached 60 years of existence — the city was entirely planned to be the capital of the country and was officially opened on April 21, 1960.

"In 2019, the city's 59th anniversary was celebrated in the Cultural Complex of the Republic, located next to the Cathedral, with great musical performances on three stages, from 10:00 AM to 11:50 PM — the event brought together 20 thousand people throughout the day. An even bigger event was expected for the 60th anniversary party.

"In 2020, however, what is heard in the place is the sound of a few cars and crickets far away. The next day, as it has been for weeks, there will be no classes at schools and universities. And churches, shopping malls and stores will be closed due to restrictive measures associated with the coronavirus pandemic."
