Native New Zealand birds

"Lunchtime on a school day: I am usually surrounded by noisy teenagers at New Zealand’s biggest high school. The only sounds I hear now are the native tui and piwakawaka birds in the bush surrounding my home.

"New Zealand in on “alert level 4” of a nationwide lockdown. This sound recording was made on day 9 of an (at least) 30 day lockdown.

  • School closures - all students on distance learning.
  • Supermarkets and pharmacies open.
  • Everything else is closed. 
  • Limited number of people inside stores, therefore, queues outside store doors. There are strict limits on how many items you can buy.
  • Non-essential stores and businesses mandated closed.
  • Car parks have been closed in our city. 
  • Entire sports seasons cancelled.
  • Concerts, tours, festivals, entertainment events - cancelled.
  • Weddings, family celebrations, holiday gatherings - cancelled.
  • No masses, churches are closed.
  • No gatherings.
  • Don't socialise with anyone outside of your home “bubble”.
  • Children's outdoor playgrounds are closed.
  • We are to keep at least 2m distance from each other at all times.
  • We are allowed to leave the house for fresh air but must stay in our local area - no driving to a beach or park. 
  • Swimming, fishing, hunting, hiking not allowed.
  • Panic buying sets in and there are limited supplies of toilet paper, disinfecting supplies, paper towels, soap, hand sanitizer, flour, yeast, bread.
  • Online shopping at supermarkets is so busy it’s hard to get a time slot for collection.

"Government closed the border to all non-essential travel. Press conferences held daily from the Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern. Daily updates on new cases, recoveries, and deaths.

"Government subsidies for affected employment because everyone must stay home. Barely anyone on the roads.

"People wearing masks and gloves outside.
Still lots people not following the rules.
We will find out next week if the lockdown will be extended.

"Until then, I will listen to the tuis."
