During the Victorian era, it was not uncommon for mothers to die during childbirth, or for illegitimate babies to be given up preserving the mother’s reputation, leaving droves of newborns in need of care.   Can you imagine anyone better suited to care for motherless newborns than a kindly old grandmother? But something seems amiss when the babies begin to vanish in her care.
