Long before he would be known primarily as the father of the reigning National Football League MVP, Pat Mahomes had a long, winding baseball career. His days as a top prospect for the Twins long past, Mahomes was an unheralded acquisition for the Mets prior to the 1999 season.
However, Mahomes soon proved a reliable reliever for Bobby Valentine and his 1999-2000 playoff squads, contributing some clutch innings down the stretch as the 1999 squad fought tooth-and-nail for a playoff spot, and coming up big again during the postseason. It was a memorable time for Mets fans, Mahomes, and his young son Patrick Mahomes II, who shagged flies in the Shea outfield back then, and still occasionally sports his dad’s Mets jersey now.
