Screening of 'Lost In Lebanon' in #UCD - Profoundly moving exposing hellish suffering of Syrian refugees and incredible difference finding asylum makes
Episode 1, Nov 17, 2019, 02:18 PM
A letter which a Syrian refugee wrote to the organiser Eileen Boyle of the screening in UCD recently of the acclaimed documentary 'Lost In Lebanon' proved deeply affecting. So disappointed at not being able to attend the Syrian who wrote the letter worked through the night to ensure it could be read out at the event. This audio report opens with a short clip of the translator Monjad reading it before the film began and it was extraordinary the way that letter resonated profoundly with the audience as they watched the documentary. The author could not reveal his name publicly as he still has family in Syria and feared for their safety.
The documentary offered a compelling portrayal of the insecurity and fear refugees and their families live with it in Lebanon of being sent back to Syria where many fear being tortured or killed by the Assad regime. The film was released in 2016 and the situation has become much worse for refugees, a fact also testified to by Eileen Boyle who visited Lebanon recently to meet refugees and see first hand conditions in the refugee camps. Eileen organised the screening with the Irish Syria Solidarity Movement, of which she is a long standing member, in association with the UCD Centre for Human Rights.
