New rules around how schools treat transgender children are 'ignoring the rights of girls' say critics. The Times has seen a confIdential draft document from the Equality and Human Rights Commission which seeks to protect the rights of children "who are simply exploring their gender identity". According to the paper - "In sensitive areas of day-to-day life, where pupils have traditionally been separated by sex, schools will either be required or advised to open up to those identifying as the same gender". So children who choose to identify as another gender, should be allowed to use the changing rooms of that gender. So is this a long overdue recognition of the needs of transgender children, or ignoring the rights of girls? Stephen got the views of commentators Angela Epstein and Emma Woolf.
