The memo said the cost and complexity of using new technology to remove the need for border checks meant "the challenges of this work cannot be underestimated". And the third most powerful politician in the United States - House of Representatives speaker Nancy Pelosi - has delivered a hard-hitting message to British and Irish politicians.
