Belfast City Council set to spend over £1M a year on bonfire related issues.
Belfast City Council is set to spend more than a million pounds a year on bonfire related funding schemes. Last night, councillors voted to increase the amount of money allocated to a controversial fund aimed at so-called "diversionary" activities in loyalist and republican areas. Supporters of that scheme - which is backed by the DUP and Sinn Fein - say it helps to reduce anti-social behaviour and prevent illegal bonfires. But other parties say there's too much secrecy around how the funding is spent. So is this a good use of ratepayers' money? Rates are going up this year.
