Spirans In Terra
Reimagined by Clutch Daisy.
"I had to search online to find out what a ‘mofette’ was when I received the link to the sound file I was assigned for this project. I’d never heard the word before. ‘Fumarole’ came up, and although I’d some distant recognition, I still couldn’t place it. It turns out it’s the name for volcanic discharge, usually of gas, commonly carbon dioxide. I thought of greenhouse gases, and our own respiratory function. This is the sound of the planet exhaling - the breathing earth. Playing with ‘non-musical’ sounds lends itself to experimentation, and my usual go-to is to stretch and play with pitch and intonation. There are three instances of the mofettes sample on this track. First, the original, which is the rapid upper register bubble and clicks. Secondly, there is that same sample stretched to over an hour in length, excerpted, and then delved into for lurking harmonic content. This time, I sourced an inverted pedal which runs throughout the track. Finally, there is the breathing itself. It sounds guttural and laboured in places - infected, even. On life support, perhaps… Piano, and synths were improvised, with hope in mind."
