"I was interested in exploring the texture, rhythm and pattern of the cicada sounds. After experimenting for a while with pitch shifting, effects and looping, I eventually found inspiration by using a very short piece of the recording as a sample and using this to create patterns of volume, panning and pitch shift changes. After the first section of the piece I bring in a longer sample with the original cicada sounds so the artificial and real patterns can be heard side by side. The final section involves pitch shifting lower and lower to round off the piece."
