The prime minister says she’s “unashamed” about wanting foreign aid to benefit British firms as she continues her first trip to Sub Saharan Africa.

Theresa May’s promising 4 billion pounds of aid, to be matched by the private sector, with the focus expected to move from reducing poverty to focus on job creation and security.

It would mean a change to UK laws, put in place after the Thatcher era aid for arms scandal, when taxpayer cash was wasted on white elephant projects abroad.

Nick Howard spoke to Polly Meeks, senior policy officer at the development network EURODAD, who’s uneasy about the announcement.
