Yesterday thousands of runners took part in the 36th Belfast Marathon, but before the event organisers warned that this could be the last time it is staged because of policing costs. Under new road legislation the organisers would be responsible for the costs of policing the event which could be upward of £100,000. The PSNI has said the reality of the financial pressures facing the organisation means it must direct resources to the areas of greatest need.
