Radio Humberside - Launch
To say that BBC Radio Humberside launched on 25 February 1971 would be almost correct. This was the seventies: Ford Cortinas; parka coats; Mint Cracknels; and power cuts. Auntie rose to the occasion and allowed the station to come on air prematurely to announce useful snippets of news, as Paul Heiney recalls fondly in this audio. From launch proper, the station broadcast from premises above a post office, rather than the splendid premises it occupies today in a very different Hull: a City now without its County.
Those of us of a certain age will recall the magic of huddling round a radio set for these lists of power cuts. I recall just the excitement, never the cold.
