Three children living in one room - the real stories behind homelessness in Northern Ireland. @nweir1 reports
When you think of homeless people, what do you think about. Someone sleeping rough, someone with drug or alcohol addictions or maybe someone with mental health problems? Would it shock you to know that according to the Audit Office there are currently around 12,000 homeless households, desperately waiting for a permanent roof over their heads... that's families, children, babies facing Christmas without a place to call home. This is Homeless Awareness Week and our reporter, Nicola Weir, spoke to two families who are facing an uncertain future. Jane - not her real name to protect her identity - is being evicted from a home she's lived in for eight years with her seven year old daughter and one year old son. Why, because her boiler is broken and the landlord says he can't afford to fix the heating. Just think about that. A one year old baby sleeping in a pram and a seven year old child sleeping on a sofa. In 2017. Homeless because of a broken down heating system. And that's just one story. Have a listen to Mary - again not her real name. She's been living with her partner and three children - aged 12, 9 and 2 - in a two bedroom hostel flat for 18months. She's at breaking point and her family is suffering. We also got reaction from SDLP councillor and homelessness activist, Paul McCusker.
