FVP Taban Deng Gai’s speech to the UN General Assembly

The First Vice President says a ‘new and balanced approach’ should be considered for effective peacebuilding.

Addressing the 72nd General Assembly of the United Nations in New York on Saturday, Taban Deng Gai said it is important to ‘incentivize peace and stability’ through development, stabilization and recovery initiatives.

The First Vice President said a new way of working should be considered that shifts focus from purely emergency support to resilience-building and saving livelihoods.

Taban Deng Gai also reaffirmed the commitment of the #SouthSudan government to fully cooperate and comply with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan - #UNMISS in easing the deployment of the Regional Protection Force, authorized by the UN Security Council.

The First Vice President also spoke about elections, giving assurances that the government will organize voting under a conducive environment, elaborating that the focus for the remaining months of the transitional period, is to ensure that “adequate preparation and creation of conducive environment for these elections” are at the forefront of government’s priorities.
