Statement by UN Special Representative to UN General Assembly High-level Humanitarian Event on South Sudan

The #UN Special Representative to #SouthSudan says civilians are bearing the brunt of the war, and is urging an end to the fighting.

David Shearer made the comments at a High-Level side-line humanitarian event at the UN General Assembly in New York.

Mr. Shearer stressed that ‘there is no other means forward other than a political solution,’ to the crisis pointing out that what started off as a main opposition group has ‘splintered’ into smaller groups often ethnically orientated.

He said aid workers continue to face restrictions through illegal checkpoints set up by these need opposition groups. The Special Representative joined discussants from the African Union, the European Union, Norway, regional governments and international aid organisations.
