UN Human Rights Council holds interactive dialogue on South Sudan

The UN Human Rights Council on Monday held an interactive dialogue on the human rights situation in #SouthSudan , with a general call for a stop to the fighting and accountability for violations.

The 47-member council, currently meeting in Geneva listened to reports from a panel of representatives from the United Nations, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC) and the South Sudan government.

The speakers regretted the human rights situation in the country and among their recommendations called for the swift establishment of the Hybrid Court.

They strongly urged the country’s leaders to prevail over the human rights situation to end the suffering of their people.
The speakers on the interactive panel included the UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights - Kate Gilmore, the Chairperson of the Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan - Yasmin Sooka and the Deputy Chairperson of the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission - Augustino Njorge.
The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Paulino Wanawilla made a presentation on behalf of the government.
