The summer transfer window closed last week as a late flurry of business saw clubs rush to buy players in the closing stages. However, Manchester City's protracted pursuit of Alexis Sanchez ended in disappointment after Arsenal failed to secure a deal in time for Thomas Lemar, while Chelsea faced multiple rejections before pushing through deals for Danny Drinkwater and Davide Zappacosta. There were plenty of other eye-catching signings completed although Philippe Coutinho leaving Liverpool wasn't one of them.
