Statement by JMEC Chairman Festus Mogae at 19th JMEC plenary – #SouthSudan 24/08/2017
The chairperson of the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC) says there has been ‘little meaningful progress’ in the peace process two years since the signing of the peace agreement.
While opening a plenary meeting of parties and stakeholders in Juba, Festus Mogae regretted the recent violence in Pagak, Upper Nile which he says has worsened the already dire humanitarian situation and led to more suffering.
The JMEC chair also regretted the slow progress in the formulation of the transitional constitution and reminded the meeting that a new constitution is a priority and prerequisite for elections at the end of the interim period.
The JMEC chair also urged the transitional government to swiftly resolve any issues with UNMISS and facilitate deployment of the Regional Protection Force without hindrance.
