BBC Radio Teesside launch - 1970
New Year's Eve, 1970 saw the birth of what was BBC Radio Teesside. Just as in Humberside, the station was caught up in the 1974 re-organisation of county boundaries, thus it evolved into BBC Radio Cleveland. Now the station is again proudly BBC Tees.
The station had been part of the second tranche of 12 BBC stations reluctantly agreed by Government at a time when funding remained uncertain; and the long term-future of the new stations, and the previous 8, still lay in doubt. The stations accordingly were rushed on air in enviable speed. Before anyone could change their mind.
