Soviet Propaganda Art
We are all familiar with Soviet Russian posters but we never see the actual art that was produced for poster production. This show at MB-XL Gallery compels us to appreciate the considerable talents of the artists issued from the Russian Academy with a unique show of 45 paintings and sketches created between 1956 and 1984. Art collector and gallery owner Jan de Maere, a professor of both art history and neuroscience, tells us what attracted him to Soviet propaganda art and of the fine line the artists had to walk between their inspiration and GLAVLIT, the state censure bureau. Exploring these and other issues, Mr. de Maere's latest book A History of Transylvania will be published in March by Avant-Propos. Through December 17 www.mb-xl.com
