Jane Bower first came to the Sóller valley as a teenager in the early 1950s. Since then she has lived in London, Paris and New York, but it’s Sóller that she calls home and Sóller to which she always returns. These are compelling reminiscences from a woman who has seen this isolated corner of Mallorca transformed from a rural mountain community into a sophisticated travel destination. Her father-in-law, Bill Bernbach, a renowned New York ad exec, is said to have provided inspiration for the character of Don Draper in the celebrated US television drama, Mad Men. Jane Bower is the author of Eliane: A memoir – the art of embracing life and nature. She chatted to Shirley Roberts in a shady corner of the orchard in the grounds of her 500-year-old former family home, Cas Fiols, which is available to rent.
