John Peel - KLIF, Radio London, BBC Radio 1

John was a surprising success story, rebelling just enough at just the right times of day (out of the limelight) to keep himself in a job long enough to become a national treasure by the time of his death.

John graduated from being a self-appointed spokesman for Liverpool whilst in America just at the height of 60s beat-pop; to a late show on the pirate Radio London where he hosted what became 'The Perfumed Garden'. Then, as so many swashbucklers, he was invited to join the new BBC Radio One where he found his feet on 'Top Gear' before slipping into the late night slot which eventually became his natural home. 

By the time he had earned success, those rebels who'd grown up listening to him had become sufficiently part of the establishment to afford him the platforms his talents warranted, not only on Radio One, but on BFBS, The World Service; and ultimately, BBC Radio 4. There, he hosted what became the loveable and popular 'Home Truths'. 

John loved new music. Many huge artists credit John for their discovery. He died at 65.
