The Wheelhouse - The Beloved Stranger
Documentary The Beloved Stranger follows the adventures of Captain Erick Mahood, six friends, a dog and a cat as they sail from San Francisco to Cartagena, Colombia. Along the way, they drink booze, smoke weed, knock back countless Mexican painkillers and write a remarkable album of music to memorialise their trip. And, of course, they film their progress – the high and the lows of five months and four thousand miles of sea – to create a movie described as ‘part punk rock nature documentary, part slapstick travel journal, and chock full of comedic gold’. Mike McDowall spoke to Erick, Devin and Anthony as they prepared to record the soundtrack for the movie, which will be released in the next few weeks. In the meantime, check out the trailer below. The purpose of the voyage was the voyage itself. However, on arrival in Colombia the crew helped to build a small hotel in San Rafael. The Ritmo del Rio recently welcomed its first guests.
