Editor of Skibbereen based newspaper, The Southern Star, talks about the Olympic O'Donovan factor
Olympic medal winning brothers Paul and Gary O'Donovan from Lisheen near Skibbereen in West Cork made history in Rio de Janeiro by becoming the first Irish rowers to ever reach the podium at the 2016 Games . Not only did they win silver in the Mens Lightweight Double Scull finals but they became known around the world for their easy going, off the cuff, hilarious interviews with reporters. With a quote from one such interview trending on Twitter in hours, the Olympians went viral.
We speak to the editor of one of the first media outlets in the world to witness the O’Donovan brother’s unique interview style. We chat with Con Downing of local West Cork newspaper, The Southern Star, about the lads, the local Olympic winning rowing club and how everyone in Skibbereen has reacted to their win and their new found fame.
