Family Favourites- first presenter
As the War ended, and radio emerged from its functional days, 'Forces Favourites' evolved into (Two Way) Family Favourites on the BBC Light Programme. It was to become as much a part of British Sunday lunchtimes as roast beef and Brussel sprouts.
Family Favourites was a request programme, linking families with their relatives serving abroad.
Its signature tune was 'With A Song in My Heart'; and its opening words were similarly memorable: "the time in Britain is twelve noon, in Germany it's one o'clock, but home and away it's time for Two-Way Family Favourites'. The programme was hosted by the likes of Jean Metcalfe, Cliff Michelmore, Jean Metcalfe, Michael Aspel, Judith Chalmers, Sarah Kennedy and Jean Challis.
The first presenter of Family Favourites was Margaret Hubble, who'd also been the first female presenter on the Allied Expeditionary Forces Programme. The Radio Times referred to her as "an extremely capable woman who is not in the least dismayed when two telephones ring simultaneously and a visitor calls to see her at the same time".
The programme died in 1980.
