Child Sexual Abuse Survivor Speaks Out as Spotlight Movie Launches
Survivors of child abuse in the Catholic Church are taking their former diocese to court after allegations of an institutional cover-up going back decades.
The claims--dating back to the 1950s and 1960s and featuring pupils at St Bede's Catholic Grammar School in Manchester--mirror those in the film Spotlight, tipped for Oscars success for its real-life depiction of a similar coverup in the Catholic Church in Boston, US, in the 1980s.
In this open and frank account Mike Sweeney, who experienced abuse at the school from the ages of 12 to 14, speaks about its impact on his relationship with his family and his career. His lawyer, Kathleen Hallisey, Senior Associate at AO Advocates, says there are “significant” similarities between Spotlight and the abuse that took place at St Bede’s Catholic school in Manchester.
