Gary Willetts on This is your Racing Life with Bryan Martin

This morning Bryan Martin caught up with champion jockey, Gary Willets. The former New Zealand based jockey, based himself in Victoria in the early 1970s. He teamed up with one of Australia’s greatest horses in Manikato and was successful on this horse 25 times. In his career, Gary was the first jockey to ride horses to win 1 million dollars in stakes in a season and rode 1493 winners before injury saw him retire in 1991. Outside of his riding, Gary has been presented to the Queen at Flemington and in 1974 he was nominated as ‘New Zealand Personality of the Year’!
