31. Il Lombardia, World Tour and David Millar
October 7 | This week’s Telegraph Cycling Podcast includes a guest appearance by David Millar, talking about his new book, The Racer, as Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Rob Hatch discuss the latest cycling news, from Il Lombardia, won by Vincenzo Nibali, to Marcel Kittel’s move to Etixx-QuickStep.
Millar’s book is the follow-up to his critically acclaimed autobiography, Racing Through The Dark, and it covers his final season as a professional cyclist in 2014. Describing it as “my love letter to cycling,” Millar reflects on favourite memories – interestingly, his near-misses appear to mean more to him than his wins – as well as his worst crashes and disappointments, in particular his non-selection for the 2014 Tour de France.
We hear from Millar during his recent show at The Dancehouse Theatre in Manchester, where he appeared, before an audience of 400, in conversation with Richard Moore. A recording of the entire show will be released as a Cycling Podcast Friends Special podcast in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, Il Lombardia – formerly the Tour of Lombardy – was the final Monument of the season and Nibali proved a deserving winner at the end of another difficult week for his team, Astana, with the manager, Alexander Vinokourov, facing corruption charges in Belgium relating to Vinokourov’s win in the 2010 Liege-Bastogne-Liege.
