30. The World Championships with Ned Boulting

September 30 | In the latest Telegraph Cycling Podcast Richard Moore and Lionel Birnie are joined by Ned Boulting to discuss last week’s world road race championships in Richmond, Virginia.

The women’s and men’s road races had worthy and deserving winners in Lizzie Armitstead and Peter Sagan: a testament to the unusual course, with its cobbles and short, sharp climbs, which produced a series of thrilling races. Armitstead justified her billing as the pre-race favourite while Sagan finally converted all his near misses (he has finished second on 16 occasions in 2015) into one huge, season-defining victory.

We also look at the news that London has withdrawn its bid to host the 2017 Tour de France Grand Départ and hear Ned’s interview with Ken Livingstone, conducted for his 2013 book On The Road Bike. Livingstone was London Mayor when the Tour visited the Capital in 2007 and recalled the modest cost, describing the decision to bid for the race as “a no brainer.” By coincidence on Tuesday Boris Johnson, the current Mayor, described the decision not to bring the Tour back in 2017 as “a no brainer.”
