A local amusement arcade's refused a licence after the police object

Derry City and Strabane District Council has refused to grant a licence for an amusement arcade - following an objection from the city's top policeman. Caesar's Palace on Strand Road is owned by the local businessman Jim McVeigh, but the application was made in his son's name. Foyle PSNI Commander Tony Callaghan objected on the grounds that Jim McVeigh has a recent conviction for criminal damage to the North West Regional College - estimated to be around £95,000, for which he was sentenced to 10 months in prison and served 6 months. Members of the council's planning committee also heard concerns about the impact on young people of the arcade.
