A man shot dead in east Belfast overnight has been named as Kevin McGuigan Sr, who was a well known republican. He was shot at Comber Court in the Short Strand on Wednesday evening. Emergency services were called to the scene just before 9 o'clock and Mr McGuigan was taken to Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital, but he died from his wounds. Police have begun a murder investigation and appealed for anyone with information to contact them. In another development it's understood that Mr McGuigan was a suspect in the murder of Gerard Jock Davison, who was shot dead earlier this year.
