Stage 8 | Froome to the fore
July 11 | The latest Telegraph Cycling Podcast comes from Brittany, where stage eight of the Tour de France finished at Mûr de Bretagne. The uphill finish saw Chris Froome to the fore as Alexis Vuillermoz jumped away to win the stage. The day’s loser was Vincenzo Nibali, the defending champion, who was dropped on the climb, conceding ten seconds to Froome and the other favourites.
Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe are joined once again by Ciro Scognamiglio of Gazzetta dello Sport to discuss the day’s events and look ahead to Sunday’s important team time trial. Froome is in yellow with an 11 seconds lead over Peter Sagan of Tinkoff-Saxo and 13 seconds on Tejay Van Garderen.
We give our predictions for the team time trial. Will Van Garderen be in yellow, or can Froome hold on?
We also discuss the overnight news that Luca Paolini of Team Katusha tested positive for cocaine after stage four. The 38-year-old Italian has been sent home and faces a suspension. Ciro was the first journalist to speak to him after the news broke, and he tells us what Paolini’s reaction was.
