Stage 4 | Martin conquers cobbles
In the latest Telegraph Cycling Podcast the team of Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe discuss Tuesday’s cobbled stage four, where Tony Martin took a well-earned solo victory to claim the yellow jersey from Chris Froome.
We hear the post-stage reaction from Nicholas Roche, Froome’s Team Sky teammate. “We got [Froome] safe and sound to the cobbled sections and then G [Geraint Thomas] did an amazing job in the last bit and Froomey as usual is up there, really focused,” said Roche.
“The first section, even through there was 130km to go, it felt like we were going into the last sector of the day,” Roche continued. “Everyone was fresh, everyone was going for it and it was really sketchy.”
We also hear from team directors Rolf Aldag of Etixx-QuickStep and Marc Reef of Giant-Alpecin. Reef’s team had a mixed day with young Frenchman Warren Barguil riding brilliantly but John Degenkolb, who was second to Martin at the finish in Cambrai, furious that his fellow German had been allowed to slip away. But why was he so angry, and with whom? Listen to the podcast to find out.
We also name the latest winner of the Tour’s most coveted prize, our daily Pédaleur de Charme award.
