The roar of the sea

By Joseph Young.

The original binaural recording was made in 2008 for a theatre production about the life of environmental campaigner and writer Rachel Carson (author of Silent Spring). Captured on a clear autumn day, the recording was made from a distance of around 30 metres from the water’s edge, sitting on the pebbles.

The re-imagined sound slows the recording down to half speed and applies some granular processing to add an analogue synthesizer feel, whilst still retaining a lot of the 3D imagery of the original binaural recording.

Recorded with Soundman II mics with pre-amp and Sony PCM M10.
