Jun 23, 2015, 10:16 AM

The leading industries in Brussels in the XVth and XVIth were weapons and luxury items. The most expensive and prized luxury items were tapestries and the finest tapestries were from Brussels and were exported all over Europe. At the time 15,000 people in Brussels were employed in the making of tapestries. With a total population of around 50,000 this means that close to one third of the population of the city was involved in tapestry production! Richard Harris speaks with with Dr. Ingrid De Meûter, Curator of the Tapestry and Textiles Collection of the Royal Museums of Art and History on the occasion of a special exhibition of the Notre-Dame du Sablon tapestries brought together for the first time in over 40 years.
