It should have been an ordinary fun-filled sunny summer's day in Derry in 2006 when Paul McCauley joined friends for a barbecue. He was blissfully unaware of the horror that was to come. Paul was battered senseless by a mob of loyalist thugs in a vicious and unprovoked attack. Why? Because he was a catholic. He suffered severe injuries, including a brain hemorrhage, a fractured skull, and had two heart attacks on the way to hospital. His father says he literally had his head kicked in. He survived only to lie in a coma for nine years. Paul passed away at the weekend, aged 38, prompting the PSNI to immediately launch a murder investigation. Only one person has ever been found guilty in connection with what happened, and last year police apologised to the family for not having brought more people to justice.
