The Day There Was No News

The BBC was mired in controversy in the 1985 when political pressure was put on the Corporation to withdraw transmission of the 'Real Lives' TV documentary 'At the Edge of the Union'. This led to a one day strike by journalists on 7th August 1985 that saw no news bulletins or current affairs programmes on BBC TV and radio. The action also affected ITN and ILR as well as two news film agencies. In this Audioboom you'll hear the Radio 4 news from the day before with newsreader Bryan Martin, BBC Chairman Stuart Young and reporter Diana Goodman. From the day of action itself some announcements about the dropping of news bulletins by Edward Cole (Radio 4), Gary Davies (Radio 1), Eugene Fraser (Radio 4), and James Alexander Gordon (Radio 2).
