Male suicide rates in focus. @matthaig1 and Dr Philip McGarry discuss #BBCNolan
Just why are suicide rates so much higher in men than women? In Northern Ireland men are three times more likely to die by suicide than women and males aged 20 to 50 have the highest suicide rate. The issue was explored in A Suicide in the Family on Panorama last night by BBC journalist Simon Jack. Simon's dad Ian, who was a musician, took his own life aged 44, the same age Simon is now. Joel was joined by Dr Philip McGarry, consultant psychiatrist and former chair of the royal college of psychiatrists in Northern Ireland and the best-selling author Matt Haig, who opened up about his own battle with depression and suicidal feelings in his latest book 'Reasons To Stay Alive'
