More than 80 per cent of adults who have autism are unemployed.

Autism is a development disorder, which can cause problems with social interaction and lead to restricted and repetitive behaviour.

And yet, many autistic people are highly intelligent, with a keen attention to detail and exceptional memory skills.

That's why the United Nations has declared this World Autism Awareness Day. It's calling on employers to be more sensitive to the needs of people with autism, and give them more opportunities.

Richard Chandler is a 30 year old management accountant at the National Autistic Society here in the UK.

He has a kind of autism known as Asperger's. Our presenter, Mike Johnson spoke to him.
