Syria Four Years On - A Syrian Voice For Peace

While it might seem impossible to be optimistic about Syria when one looks at the horrific statatics, one Syrian woman refuses to accept the Syrian people will fail to overcome their grim current bloody divisions.

What began four years ago as a national peaceful protest against President Basheer Al Asaad’s government has turned into one of the world’s bloodiest conflicts. Today with no end in sight 200,000 Syrians are dead with as many as 10 million uprooted and the entire region has been destabilised.

In London on Wednesday (12 March, 2015) 'Behind the headlines: Syria Four Years On' was the titile of a “Guadian Live” event which sought to offer some understanding about one of the world’s most brutal conflicts and led to the emergence of Islamic State or ISIS. Those speaking included leading experts on the region including journalist, academics and researchers. One of those was Syrian Rim Turkmani – senior research fellow at the LSE – London School of Economics and a co-founder of the Syrian Civil Coalition that supports civil society building, a process she argues the media has overlooked.

Anne Daly spoke to Rim Turkmani and asked her how are people surviving and raising their families in the midst of such bloody conflict.
