6. Ian Stannard outwits Etixx-Quick Step
March 5 | How did Ian Stannard of Team Sky beat three riders from the same team to win Het Nieuwsblad, the opening cobbled race of the new season?
In the latest Telegraph Cycling Podcast, in which Richard Moore and Lionel Birnie are joined by Sky Sports’ Orla Chennaoui, we look back at Stannard’s out-foxing of the three Etixx-Quick-Step riders on the run-in to Ghent, and also discuss Mark Cavendish’s victory in Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne.
There are interviews with Stannard’s sports director, Servais Knaven, and Team Sky’s Luke Rowe, who finished 9th in Het Nieuwsblad. And we hear from the unhappy manager of the three Etixx riders, Patrick Lefevere, who was critical of Stannard for not working with his men. “He won, he is a strong rider, but it is not a big win,” was Lefevere’s verdict.
We also report from the Wiggle Honda team launch in Ghent with manager Rochelle Gilmore telling us about her plans for 2015, which she hopes ends with her squad ranked the world’s number one women’s team.
Gilmore is equally committed to developing the women’s sport and says she’s optimistic. “Things don’t happen overnight,” said Gilmore. “A lot of people are investing in this and working really hard.
“There are so many small wins everyday,” Gilmore continued. “People’s attitudes are changing and that’s something that’s driving me.”
