Munich weekend: German stereotypes alive and well in the Hofbrau Haus

Take one big hall, hundreds of jolly people, mountains of sausage, schnitzel and beer, and an Oom-pah band, and what have you got? A theme park presenting every foreigner's stereotype of Germany in one neat package.

But don't take from this that I dislike the Hofbrau Haus, the beer hall of beer halls. On the contrary, it is a wonderfully merry, evocative place where one can hardly fail to be cheery and where Bavarian food and drink is as hearty as one has always imagined it.
