According to Scandinavian folklore, trolls are hairy stupid creatures that live in mountains and under bridges.

If you're unlucky enough to come across one, you should stay away. They're dangerous, threatening to eat vulnerable goats, demanding money from those who cross bridges, and abducting beautiful maidens.

They're crafty little things too -- they can change their appearance.

Perhaps that's why one of Denmark's most revered academic organisations is pumping money into researching trolls.

The danish council for independent research has awarded more than $400,000 to a PhD student to hunt for trolls.

The BBC's correspondent in Denmark, Malcolm Brabant, tells us more.
