Is the era of the superstar fund manager over?

Despite conservative appearances, sensible haircuts and smart suits and ties, the world of finance still has its share of rock stars.

Bill Gross, the founder of Pacific Investment Management Company - or PIMCO - is one such superstar.

Since starting the firm in 1971, Gross built PIMCO into a financial giant. It's now the largest bonds trader in the world, with two trillion dollars of assets under management.

But now, the 'Bond King' has announced he's leaving the company he created, in favour of a much smaller competitor.
