Radio 1 Switches on FM
It’s hard to imagine now, but to listen to Radio 1 and 2 in the 70s and 80s required a certain amount flicking between medium wave, long wave and VHF. Radio 1 didn’t get its own dedicated FM service until 1988 – though it had used 104.8 in London from late 1987. The big switch-on day for the Midlands, the north of England and Central Scotland was 1 September 1988. Band of the moment Bros were on hand to throw the switch at the transmitters.
