Top 20 - Radio 1 - November 1972
For a generation, this was the sound that bridged a happy school-free weekend and the smell of ironing and Sing Something Simple. The Sunday evening BBC chart on Radio 1 with chocolate-voiced Tom Browne.
Back then, it was simply a two hour Top 20, with Tom introducing the songs one by one. No fannying around, just announcements, random sound effects, ‘Number Twenny’ number jingles; and a compulsory husky female VO now and again. Add in the Osmonds, Stylistics and Gilbert O’Sullivan and you’re back there in November 1972, when this was recorded by a friend of mine on a cheap cassette. Witness too the Radio 2 jingles at the end, as the FM frequencies were handed back to Mother.
