Stage 13: Nibali tightens his grip in the Alps

On the first Alpine stage of the 2014 Tour de France the latest Telegraph Cycling Podcast, supported by Jaguar, reports ‘live’ from Chamrousse on Vincenzo Nibali’s stage win and Richie Porte’s collapse.

Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe were at the summit of the climb and watched the race unfold before speaking to some of the riders at the finish. There are interviews with a disappointed Porte and the revelation of the stage, Leopold Konig of the Czech Republic, who was third, as well as Team Sky principal Sir Dave Brailsford and BMC sports director Max Sciandri.

There are also interviews from the stage start in Saint-Etienne with Polish rider Michal Kwiatkowski, Australia’s Simon Clarke, and Andriy Grivko, the Astana rider and the only Ukrainian in the race. Grivko reflects on recent tragic events in his home country, including the alleged shooting down of a Malaysian Airlines plane on Thursday, an event marked by a minute’s silence before the stage began.

Later, at the summit of Chamrousse, Brailsford promised that his team, despite losing any hope of winning the Tour, told the podcast that they would try for stage wins instead. “We’re not going to roll over,” he said. “It was a blow losing Chris [Froome, to a crash on stage five], and seeing how Nibali’s going, it would’ve been an interesting race. We recalibrated then and now we’ve got to recalibrate again. I think we can look to animate the race as much as we can.”
