Stage 5: The Tour's descent into Hell

In this episode of The Telegraph Cycling Podcast, supported by Jaguar, Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe dissect an incredible day's racing over the muddy cobbles of northern France.

Bad weather persuaded the organisers to divert the race past two of the nine planned sections of cobbles but the 2013 champion Chris Froome failed to make it as far as the first stretch of pavé, crashing and further injuring the wrist he hurt in Tuesday's crash.

Froome pulled out of the race and for the other overall contenders it was a day to survive. Italy's Vincenzo Nibali struck a huge blow for his chances of winning the yellow jersey when he finished third on the stage behind Belkin's Lars Boom and his own team-mate Jakob Fuglsang.

Lionel headed out onto the course to capture some of the atmosphere. In this episode, we hear from five-time Tour winner Eddy Merckx, Omega Pharma-Quick Step mechanic Dominique Landuyt about the unique challenges of today's stage, BMC Racing sports director Allan Peiper and Team Sky's Dave Brailsford.

There's also an appearance from Gazzetta Dello Sport's Ciro Scognamiglio, who is on cloud nine now Nibali has extended his lead over Alberto Contador.
