Dublin Famine Memorial Protest in Solidarity with People Starving in 'Food Sieges' in Syria
This week is the third anniversary of the Syrian Revolution, a conflict which began when a peaceful demonstration against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was brutally repressed by his armed forces. Three years on and with no end in sight the war has been described as the world's worst humanitarian crisis. The conflict has cost the lives of thousands of innocent civilian espcially especially women and children. A particularly brutal aspect of this conflict has been the way the Assad regime has used food as a weapon against the civilian population. These so called 'food sieges' have prevented vital life saving humanitarian aid from reaching several thousands of trapped civilians in key Syrian cities such as Homs and Alleppo. In a global day of solidarity to remember the Syrian dead, displaced, and detained many European citizens and activists have been gathering to protest at what is happening. The protest was held at the Famine Memorial in an attempt to link the Great Irish Famine of 1845 with those being starved in Syria today. Esperanza Documentary filmmaker Anne Daly went along to get the reaction of those who attended. Anne Daly is co-founder of Esperanza Productions award winning documentary filmmakers.
